Norwegian Refugee Council
After more than 50 years of working to safeguard the rights of refugees throughout the world, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) today is one of Norway’s largest independent emergency assistance organizations, and the only organization in the country to have specialized in international efforts targeted towards refugees and people who are displaced within their own countries.
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has worked for displaced persons since 1946. It is today a private foundation, and one of the largest humanitarian organizations in Norway. NRC has specialized in international activities for refugees and displaced persons. Through its efforts they provide assistance and contribute towards the protection of displaced people.
NRC executes projects in Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe. Protection is the cornerstone in all its efforts aimed at refugees and internally displaced persons, and will be a reoccurring theme in all of NRC's activities.
In 1991, NRC established the world's first emergency preparedness force for the UN system. The emergency roster NORCAP consists of 850 women and men, ready to deploy within 72 hours to anywhere in the world to assist in emergency operations. At any given time, approximately 120 persons are on assignment globally. NRC’s emergency response roster, NORCAP, is the personnel component of NOREPS and can be mobilized within 72 hours.
NRC wants to be a forceful advocate for the rights of refugees and internally displaced persons, internationally as well as in Norway. Advocacy is an integrated part of our program activities.
